Elena Ferrante I’m almost finished with Elena Ferrante’s The Lost Daughter–so different and interesting. I had never heard of her until Alexander Chee mentioned her on Facebook. I did finish and love Tumbledown by Robert Boswell but otherwise I’m still reading all the other books I was reading back in November : ( And I’ve added so many more to my stack. Drowning in books but such a lovely way to go… New Year’s resolution: I want to read more!!!

nov 11 readingIn July I started Gone Girl and I’m still listening (and enjoying) it in bits and pieces in my car. In October I started Train Shots by Vanessa Blakely (debut stories), Ten Things I’ve Learnt About Love by Sarah Butler (debut novel), and Tumbledown by Robert Boswell (novel). It is NO reflection on these books that I have not finished them yet. I started each of them while reading other things because I couldn’t wait. Next up with Shakespeare: The Comedy of Errors.

What I’m reading now: Henry VI, Part 2; Cloud Atlas; Gone Girl How I chose these books: I keep meaning to write a blog post about the Shakespeare. Cloud Atlas sits by my bed, recommended by one of my sons. The movie trailer looks awesome, and I want to read the book before I see the movie. Gone Girl, I’m listening to on Audible and enjoying. I decided to read it on a dare after the same son accused me of having a “snobby writer attitude.”  : ) Of interest to me: 4th month in a row that I’ve read multiple books at the same time. I used to do it all the time.

What I’m reading now: Where You Can Find Me by Sheri Joseph and The Woman Upstairs by Claire Messud

How I chose these books: I loved Sheri’s debut novel, Stray, published in 2007, and was excited to discover at AWP that she had a new novel coming out in April. I was intrigued in April by the short reviews I was reading of Claire Messud’s new novel. In 2006, I read two of her novels, loving The Last Life (for which I even created a color-coded chart trying to figure out its structure) but not loving her debut When the World Was Steady (nominated for the Pen/Faulkner Award in 1995). Interesting. I discovered her writing at The New York State Summer Writers’ Workshop, where she gave a reading.

Of interest to me: 2nd month in a row that I’ve read two books at the same time…

  1. RE: JESUS’ SON BY DENIS JOHNSON
I love this book, Jesus’ Son by Denis Johnson. It’s one of those books I always go back to for its spare prose, wry gritty humor and small moments of lyrical beauty that seem to rise almost magically out of a desolate, drug-addled world.

  2. RE: THE GIRL WHO FELL FROM THE SKY

Hope you enjoy it, Cynthia. I am partial to the child narrator who appeals to the adult reader and cannot wait to hear how you like it.
